Culture and History in Sri Lanka

Through the Mahawanshaya and other ancient Indian texts, Sri Lanka has a continuous written history of more than 2,500 years. In the Ramayana, for example, the island (called Lanka) served as the stronghold of King Ravana, who kidnapped Sita, the wife of Rama, an avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu. According to folklore, Hanuman the flying monkey burned down the Lankan city before Rama and his surviving men crossed the sea on a land bridge constructed on the mainland.

In the late sixth century B.C., Sinhalese people, most likely from northern India, migrated to Sri Lanka. Anuradhapura (a monarchy from around 200 BCE to roughly 1000 CE) and Polonnaruwa were two of the island’s primary centers of culture when Buddhism arrived in the middle of the third century BC (c. 1070–1200). The first Buddhist structures were built during the Anuradhapura era. During this time, Sri Lanka engaged in commerce with several Asian and European cultures, including the Roman Empire.

Getting around in Sri Lanka

Public transportation and other forms of infrastructure in Sri Lanka are constantly being improved. And this makes it simpler for tourists to explore the country on their own. If you want to explore the islands with expert advice, go with a local travel guide. A chauffeur service can help you explore the island in perfect, luxury style.

Buses may not seem like the most enticing mode of transportation to some people because of the sometimes enormous crowds (particularly on holidays) and general lack of baggage space. They’re low-cost, abundant, and available in a variety of quality levels; all the while, they provide an excellent opportunity to engage with locals.

The Sri Lankan climate

The climate of Sri Lanka has a typical tropical environment, with rainy and dry seasons alternating. The weather in Sri Lanka is typically tropical. No severe winters characterize the climate, which is in keeping with the laid-back attitude of the country’s people. The lack of precipitation throughout the dry seasons may make the summers hot.

However, it also incorporates elements from a wide variety of other cultures and countries. Restaurants on the island often provide standard Western fare or franchises like KFC and McDonald’s.
